Advancing with Watercolor "Rain Delay" Edges
composing
In this weeks painting of Fenway Park I have used the image above as a springboard to a more imaginative composition and portrayal of this motif. A problem crossed miming as I looked at the photo - I saw many interesting shapes and patterns in the motif and so from first glance Wanted to create a painting of this view - I felt the light was very flat and the thought occurred to me to paint this as a rainy day scene. I would make you of the perspective the interesting silhouettes and juxtapose figures and reflections onto the scene. Through some sketches I became familiar with this subject and have a good understanding of the essential qualities of the shapes. I experimented with placing the subject a little high in the vertical sheet to increase the drama and increase the opportunities for reflections. It should be clear the while the view is exaggerated Fenway Park is built onto a rising hill. This big empty space below in the space in the lower half of the painting lets me generate more atmosphere and drama. The idea was arrived at naturally and organically as my mind played with the parts. I have come to feel that this is much more fluid after coming to know the scene so well.

Basic Drawing Tonal Values

Basic Drawing Tonal Values For this class we are dealing only with gray because we are using a pencil. That means that you've already been working with total values with out knowing anything about them Somehow you are able to translate the color that you see into black-and-white simply by comparing the darkness of one object to another. Now that we understand what tonal values are by definition...

Advancing with Watercolor Painting Motif #1
Переглядів 6 тис.6 місяців тому
Description Today I am revisiting a subject called Motif #1 - which is basically a lobster shack in the middle of the harbor at Rockport Ma. It is a famous subject - you have only to google the line motif #1 Rockport to see a variety of paintings, and photos of this icon. It has been sort of a rite of passage to aspiring and accomplished artists in the Cape Ann region. Unfortunately like many s...

Its Monsoon time in India. These small scenes are stories to tell through watercolors . Love it master.
Thank you Madder - stay dry!
Great to hear how you tell a story in this painting. You are a master. Thank you Gary!
Thank you Debra!!
It may seem at first that you're vaguely following a plan, leaving everything to chance, but then I understand how precisely and masterfully you achieve your goal. The same goes for your brushstrokes. Very, very impressive, thank you very much for this demonstration which makes me realize that I've still got quite a job ahead of me....
Great comments Claude - Thank you

Wonderful demo!
Thank you Ria!!
Great talent of yours! Congrats.
Many Thx!
As always so beautiful!
Thx Preva!
Very atmospheric and skilful use of the different line thicknesses - wonderful capture of the lighting conditions. Fantastic result, as if I were standing there in the meadow. And only one clear cow is recognisable enough to identify the rest as a herd, a great trick, thank you! The previous small drawing study of the animal bodies and also the human are very helpful, I am now a lot wiser, because it is one thing to look at these drawings already finished or to observe them in their creation by a practised hand. I usually only look at your watercolour creations and found this a pleasant change. I have one request: could you remove the tape around the picture for the viewer at the end of your sessions? It is so very satisfying to watch. Thank you for all your videos! Greetings from Germany.
Great comments - Thx for sharing with me!!
Thank you so much for sharing your process! I appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos ❤. Amazing work!
Many thx !!
Really beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! David
I was impressed by how you dropped that run-back onto the top of the train (without comment) and it turned into a light flare. That’s master level water control.
Letting watercolor do its thing - - thx Jeff
Thanks Gary. Skylines are one of my favourite motifs. I love how the sky turned out. Must switch to yellow ochre instead of raw sienna just to see the difference.
Thx Barbara - I should give the ray Sienna another gp

Gary, I've watched lots of your videos and greatly appreciate both your artistic and teaching styles. Just curious on this one - guess I've never met a Ramen Man, but what is his right hand doing/holding? And what is underneath the ladle - a table, a large pot? Thanks!
Hes holding a ladle and a strainer with fresh noodles - thx Micheal
Thanks...
Top ten valuable looking over artist shoulder video! YT junkie -pro-tip: turn off the sound and view it a second time, then I saw learned much more when I could respond with a personal inner dialoge.
thx Liti - good commentary - watching without the sound!
Absolutely stunning work! I'm glad to have found it, will definitely rewatch to paint along
many thx!
